Our Patients' Stories

Susanna D, 15

"To tell you the truth, I didn’t really want to take vision therapy. To me, it was just another cockamamie idea of my mother’s, gained from an OT conference she had gone to. I was perfectly fine, visually. I didn’t need to wear glasses and I had near perfect vision (according to the school nurse, and the doctor), so I didn’t see the point in wasting my time on a Monday afternoon, when I had the most homework, at the optometrist’s. But as usual, I was dragged into it, because my mum was tired of me being a grump at the end of every school day.

It was found that, although I had perfect acuity, my eyes didn't work as a team. (This) was causing me to have headaches, which I thought was normal.

… So, I spent the next couple of months learning how to relax my visual system, diverge and converge my eyes … It has helped. I can once again work on the computer and read books without tiring …. My parents have said that I can be around other people without being irritable the whole time. I actually enjoy being with friends rather than avoiding social situations…. I don’t bump into furniture and door frames as much as previously and can even catch a ball occasionally. My writing is now in a size that others can read and I seem to be slightly better organized .. Well, as much as a 15 year old teenager can be!!"

Su, 32

"I started vision therapy in August of 2004 and finished in eight months. I began vision therapy because of my habit of suppressing my eye. I would turn off my right eye when doing close work, then, to compensate, turn off my left eye when looking at a distance. My goal was to achieve binocular vision, regardless of whether I was viewing things far or near. I wanted to be able to read for longer periods of time without fatigue.

…. I also had very poor visual skills throughout my life. I would always bump into things, as evidenced by dents all around my car. My family members refused to let me drive their cars because of the notorious dents…. I was also very bad at parking and always misjudged space. It was especially challenging to participate in sports. I would always have my hands or glove positioned in the wrong spot when people threw a ball at me.

I always attributed these problems to being clumsy. But now, after vision therapy, I realize that suppressing one eye is what caused me to misjudge the space.

When I began vision therapy, I had no idea how much I would gain from the program. Dr. de Simone and Kathy are extremely good therapists. They complement each other very well in providing a supportive and nurturing environment for their patients to grow and succeed. They provide challenging vision therapy tasks gradually and are very aware of their patients’ progress.

My job requires me to read constantly. Overall, doing vision therapy has increased my productivity tremendously. It used to be that I would never read for pleasure, so that I could save my eyes for work reading. But now, I seek out pleasure reading like never before. I am so grateful that a whole new world of knowledge has opened up to me ...

Vision therapy has helped me so much, not only in terms of vision, but in all areas of my life. I feel that it was the best financial investment I have ever made. I recommend vision therapy for anyone who can use a change in their visual system. I was amazed that working on my visual system could help me in so many areas of my life. I feel a positive spillover effect in my emotional, mental, and physical health..."

Emily Tully, 8

"Vision therapy helped me to see better. In first grade it was hard to read and spell hard words like ‘because’ and I didn’t like school. I saw 2 of things (double vision) and I crossed my eyes. Vision therapy helped me read and write and it was fun. I liked doing the ball game attached to the trampoline on the wall. I also liked the block game with the white board in front of us. Every day I had fun in Vision Therapy because we did different activities. Now I can read chapter books and I learned how to write and spell better. Thank you Kathy and Linda!!!"

The Bates Family

"I am writing to tell you how much our experience at Eye Priority has changed our lives. Our son was experiencing headaches, difficulty comprehending what he read and an all around frustration when learning. These were just a few of many challenges he had when attempting to participate in an activity that dealt with vision.

After completing vision therapy and our son's diligent dedication to doing his daily exercises we have seen great improvement in many areas. He is able to read without pausing, his comprehension has improved by leaps and bounds and his writing and composition is drastically better. Not to mention the benefits of increased physical coordination and sports abilities.

The dedicated employees at Eye Priority are a blessing, including the friendly employees at the front desk to the helpful and kind people in the optical area.

There are not enough words to express my gratitude and respect for Kathy, Linda, and Kelly. These women offered so much support, patience, and love. Because of their dedication, our son also gained a wealth of confidence and a boost in his self-esteem. "
