Visual Symptoms of a Concussion

Vision therapy can help symptoms of a concussion whether it is from a fall, a vehicular accident, or a sports injury. A concussion may lead to a diagnosis of Post Concussion Vision Syndrome. Those diagnosed with Post Concussion Vision Syndrome often have visual symptoms that are related to dysfunction between the ambient and the focal visual processes. These two systems are responsible for the ability to organize oneself in space for balance and movement, as well as to focalize on detail. Driving requires both systems. Reading requires both systems. The ambient system helps you find your place in the parking lot or on the page, while the focal system allows you to read your speedometer or see letters and words. After a concussion, these systems are out of balance. Vision therapy can help!

Symptoms and Signs of a Concussion:

  • Transient blurred vision

  • Double vision

  • Reduced ability to sustain attention on visual tasks

  • Dizziness

  • Headaches

  • Eye strain

  • Confusion related to visual tasks

  • Difficultly reading

  • Eye turns

  • Closing or covering one eye

  • Head tilts or turns

  • Bumping into objects

  • Abnormal posture

  • Balance and coordination problems

  • Poor judgment or depth

  • Light sensitivity

  • Reduced ability to accurately localized object

At Eye Priority RE-Vison, we help patients suffering from Post Concussion Vision Syndrome to reduce the dysfunction between the ambient and the focal systems. We help patients return to driving and reading comfortably. Activities to reduce this dysfunction may include:

  • Elemental Eye Control, which increases endurance, range of motion, and flexibility of the eyes in all positions.

  • Tracking in Space, which increases binocular coordination, endurance, range of motion, and flexibility in divergence and convergence.

  • Peripheral Vision Awareness, which increases balance, comprehension, and improves clarity.

  • Syntonics (colored light therapy), which is used as a tool to stimulate the biochemistry of the brain through the visual system to create balance. Different colors measured by wavelengths of light are used for the patient based on diagnoses and symptoms. The colors are viewed for a prescribed period of time. The autonomic nervous system is brought into syntony or balance resolving symptoms.
